Introduction

I received the PhD degree in computer science in 2010 from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, which is one of the top research institutes in China. After my graduation, I have been continuously involving in the field of biomedical informatics at Vanderbilt

My research interests include data mining, machine learning, disease diagnostic predictive models, disease profiling and personalized medicine, healthcare workflow mining, healthcare organizaiton modeling, social media and web data analytics for public health, hospital readmission and patient length of stay analytics, natural language processing and text mining, recommender systems, clinical phenotyping, and innovative visualization techniques for query and analysis of medical data.

Active Research Projects

1. Learning Patterns of Collaboration to Optimize the Management of Care Providers

The research goal of this project is to create data mining models (e.g., social network analysis models) to learn care team and clinical workflow from data in electronic medical records.

2. Length of Stay Analysis

The goal of this project is to identify factors (e.g., patients' historical health conditions, care transitions, socio-economics, health insurance programs) impacting length of stay (LOS), which can provide evidences for healthcare organizations to potentially reduce healthcare cost.

3. Learning Opportunities for Drug Repositioning via GWAS and PheWAS Findings

The goal of this project is to leverage Genome-Wide Association Studies (GWAS) and Phenome-Wide Association Studies (PheWAS) findings to discover new targets for existing drugs.

4. Disease Prediction from Data in Electronic Medical Records

The goal of this project is to predict disease (e.g., neonatal encephalopathy) at an earlier time to provide sufficient time for healthcare organizations to adopt approriate intervention strategies to improve care quality.
